A NEW road across the northern part of Taunton has been supported by Taunton Deane Council - although they want the plans tweaked slightly.
The one-mile Northern Inner Distributor Road will link Staplegrove Road to Priory Avenue, running beside the railway line, over the disused rail bridge at Whitehall, across the River Tone and Bridgwater & Taunton Canal.
Last night's Deane planning committee backed the proposals, although there were calls for traffic lights instead of a roundabout at the Staplegrove Road/Chip Lane junction, more trees planting to shield homes in Whitehall and a cycle track.
The final decision will be taken by Somerset County Council.
BOSSES at Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service are consulting on plans to be among the country’s top brigades within six years.
ARMED police surrounded a house in Wellington last night following reports that a man had been shot.

THERE have been a few hairy MOments at Taunton School and its Prep School recently.
