Big Exeter City weekend for former Yeovil Town hero
Former Yeovil Town striker Adam Stansfield is heading for Wembley on Sunday with Exeter City
Former Yeovil Town striker Adam Stansfield is heading for Wembley on Sunday with Exeter City

FORMER Yeovil Town striker Adam Stansfield will be hoping to make Exeter City's staring line-up on Sunday when they tackle Cambridge United in the Blue Square Conference Premier play-off final at Wembley Stadium.

Stansfield has played a leading part in Exeter's efforts to get the club promoted back to the Football League and come Sunday's 4pm kick-off they will be just 90 minutes away from completing the job.

He signed for Yeovil in November 2001 and went on to score 16 goals in league and cup competitions that season - which included eight goals in the FA Trophy as the Glovers went all the way to Villa Park and won the trophy with a 2-0 success over Stevenage Borough.

He had become one of the hottest properties in non-league football, but his world was shattered on the opening day of the 2002-03 season against Gravesend and Northfleet when he broke his leg and he was ruled out for the entire campaign which Yeovil clinch the Nationwide Conference crown and with it promotion to the Football League.

The then Yeovil manager Gary Johnson kept faith with Stansfield and made 35 appearances for the club in their debut season in the old Division Three.

In total he made 67 appearances for Yeovil and scored 22 goals before moving to Hereford United and then onto Exeter where he has been the last couple of seasons.

Exeter will be hoping it is second time lucky come Sunday after missing out in last season's play-off final when they went down 2-1 at Wembley to Morecambe.

The Exeter fans have already had one massive result to celebrate when they overturned a 2-1 semi-final first leg deficit to beat arch rivals Torquay United 4-1 and 5-3 on aggregate at Plainmoor.

Cambridge, who finished runners-up in the Conference behind runaway leaders Aldershot Town, made it through to Wembley with a 4-3 aggregate victory over Burton Albion.
