Aid worker safe and well

A CROWCOMBE man who distributes aid to people in Burma is safe and well after the weekend's catastrophic cyclone.

As reported in the County Gazette, Richard Butterworth is working with the Government's Department for International Development in Burma.

It is thought more than 22,000 people have been killed and a further 41,000 are missing feared dead after the cyclone.

Richard's parents, who live in Crowcombe, passed the County Gazette this message from Richard yesterday (Wednesday) saying that he, his wife, Keiko, and son, Ewan, were all fine.

He said: "The area is a mess. I spoke to a 72-year-old woman on Saturday, who said she had never seen anything like this in her life.

"Most of the city is without power, and even for the lucky few like us who have generators, supplies of diesel are low and the street price is up to $10 a gallon.

"Mains water is off and there is a limit to how long people can afford diesel for pumps.

"Some parts of town were devastated, particularly low-lying flood-prone areas with wooden houses. And that's just in the city. What things are like in the delta we dread to think. It's all very sad.

"At work, we are trying to contact people to work out what needs to be done, who is available to do it and who the authorities will allow to do something.

"I suspect we have a busy few days ahead."
